2:4 Woman (Gk gunai ) was a polite form of address that Jesus used elsewhere to address other women (4:21; 20:13; Mt 15:28; Lk 13:12). His use of this formal noun of address seemed to push the event into a more formalized and thus less intimate relationship. His public ministry had already begun. Family members often use more generic designations of one another in public settings. Jesus might also have been consciously trying to change Mary’s thinking as a mother in order to spare her additional suffering when His hour would come. Jesus was still her son during His last hours on the cross, but He was now her Lord as well.

Clearly Mary was not offended by her Son’s words, and with confidence she still anticipated that he would intervene in some way, which indeed He did. But He chose to do so without calling attention to the miracle.

2:13-25 This cleansing symbolized that the temple, along with the ceremonies and rituals that accompany it, was about to be replaced. Jesus’s body represented the new temple.
