We Aren’t In Competition With Each Other

We are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.

“Race you to the finish!” Piper called over her shoulder to her friend Brynn. She looked back as Brynn’s pace slowed to a jog. Piper stopped to wait until Brynn had caught up to her. “What’s wrong?” she asked.

“Not everything has to be a competition,” Brynn responded, kicking the dirt on the school track.

“I’m sorry,” Piper said. “You’re right. We can just finish together.” The two friends jogged to the finish.

It happens a lot—we compete on sports fields, in classrooms, music halls, and art studios. Competing as part of a sports team or league isn’t necessarily bad. It provides opportunities to encourage us or build community among people. But in God’s Kingdom, we are not to see ourselves in competition with one another.

We don’t compete with others for God’s love or his grace. We do not have to compete over dreams that we have or gifts we’ve been given. God has assignments and hopes for each of us, so we don’t ever need to think that another girl is our competition in our efforts to accomplish our dreams.

Just like a painting is considered a work of art and completely unique, so God views us as a masterpiece, created new in Christ, so we can each do the good things he’s planned for us long ago. When we fully understand this truth, we stop seeing ourselves as in competition with other girls and are free to cheer on those around us in all they are doing. Let’s be girls who show up for one another while confidently pursuing the passions that God’s given to each of us.
