Freedom On The Inside

If the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.

John 8:36

In 1995, Hollywood released Braveheart, a movie about the cost of fighting for freedom. The movie centered on a Scottish man who led his countrymen in a battle to have their own king and no longer be subject to England. Such freedom would affect how the Scottish managed their trade, their alliances, their finances, and ultimately their place in the world. The famous line at the end of the movie is the lead actor yelling “Freedom!” as he dies.

The freedom portrayed in the movie is honorable and noble, but it is also limited and focused on external things. The Bible talks about spiritual freedom that will transform us from the inside. We all live for something. For some people it’s money, the next promotion, social or career status, health and fitness, a hobby or pleasure. We might try to justify why we “need” this thing we devote our lives to, but our single-minded drive for something—whether it be pleasure, comfort, or success—can become a form of bondage.

Christ’s mission is to set us spiritually free from sin and whatever obstacles hinder our walk with him. The freedom he provides empowers us to live differently—as overcomers, even in the midst of the most challenging circumstances. Living in freedom can mean that even though we’re going through tough times, we are open to serving others and obeying God’s commands. Even though we do not feel our best, we listen and follow, playing an active role in the changes God wants to make in our hearts and lives.

From an earthly mind-set, it makes no sense to serve when we don’t feel like it. But God has set us free with a purpose, so that we can do the tasks he has prepared for us.
