The Day Is Coming

I wait for the Lord, my soul waits. And in his word I do hope. My soul waits for the Lord more than those who watch for the morning.

Psalm 130:5–6 nkjv

Life is full of anticipation, times spent waiting for something to arrive or happen. Our minds play the upcoming event on repeat. We look forward to that day, preparing and waiting, wondering what it will be like. Then it happens! The day arrives, and we feel a sense relief and excitement. Our stomachs flutter a bit. Our hearts race a little faster. Our eyes widen, a smile appears, and every trouble or concern seems to fade in comparison to the arrival of the moment we’ve been waiting for.

Do you remember the last time you felt this way? Well, another day like that is coming. During times of trial, it might be hard to know it’s true. So much might be clouding our vision that it’s difficult to see anything. And for some of us, we have been waiting expectantly for a long time. Maybe we’ve been waiting for a reprieve or cure or simply a change for the better that never seems to come. Instead, we’re living with a body or mind that—in our belief—has failed us. All our tears, prayers, interventions have yielded no relief. We are done! But God is not.

God never promised a life without pain or discomfort. However, his Word does declare that at his designated time, all agony, worries, and hurt will be no more. He will gather us into his arms and wipe away our tears. The trial will be over. And that is worth waiting for.

Waiting for God means power to do nothing save under command. This is not lack of power to do anything. Waiting for God needs strength rather than weakness. It is power to do nothing. It is the strength that holds strength in check. It is the strength that prevents the blundering activity which is entirely false and will make true activity impossible when the definite command comes.

If the Lord Jehovah makes us wait, let us do so with our whole hearts; for blessed are all they that wait for Him. He is worth waiting for. The waiting itself is beneficial to us: it tries faith, exercises patience, trains submission, and endears the blessing when it comes. The Lord’s people have always been a waiting people.
