A Student Of History

A Student of History

Has a scent or song ever taken you back to a long-forgotten event from years past? Our senses can provide such triggers.

What does that tell you? For one, it says that your brain is a vast database of historical knowledge, and also that much of that history is hidden inside without your awareness.

We’re told that it’s important to be students of history. Reviewing past events involving nations, social movements, and famous individuals is said to help inform who we are in the present and who we may become in the future.

You can’t change your history, but you should become its student. There may lie hidden in your psyche significant or even traumatic events that affect who you are today, memories that can solve the mystery of why you do the things you do.

The past is past. But it may be time to stop and see what has made you who you are.

Dwell in the past and you’ll lose an eye. Forget the past and you’ll lose both eyes. —Russian proverb
