Breaking Down the Dividing Wall

Most women and some men enjoy a good chick flick. We enjoy the thrill of discovery in films like When Harry Met Sally. We want to hear how boy meets girl. The goal is getting them together so they’ll live “happily ever after.” But what happens after that? Most stories don’t tell us.

God’s story is more about what happens ever after. In the first two chapters, God meets Adam and Eve and they look like a great match. But then humankind leaves God, and the rest is about how they get back together.

Reaching out to strangers is a mirror of our story with God. All of us were once strangers to God. We held different beliefs, lived different lifestyles. We sat alone in our poverty, behind our prison walls. And God came to visit us in our aloneness.

He sacrificed everything so we would no longer be strangers. So we could live happily ever after.

[He] has destroyed . . . the dividing wall of hostility. . . . He came and preached peace to you who were far away and peace to those who were near. —Ephesians 2:14, 17
