For Sale: Washer and dryer. Gently used. Well, maybe not gently, but lovingly used. Okay, used several times a day for five years washing soiled kids’ clothes over and over (and over), my husband’s boxer shorts (did I just say that?), sometimes items like car keys, action figures, and pocket change. It runs okay. We’ll sell it cheap. I’m just desperately in need of a new one. Will you help? Please?

You probably wouldn’t see many ads like this in your local paper or online classifieds. But if you filtered classified ads through a lie detector, they just might start to look a little more like this!

Buying used goods from individuals or at yard sales is a way to help others live a life that matters. You’re helping them purge items they don’t need, make extra income, and improve the efficiency of their home. You’re also saving yourself money in the process.

Consider how you can support your neighbor in the realm of fair trade.

And don’t forget to haggle.
