Fruit for Eternity

Parenting matters because it is probably our best picture of eternity.

Most of us feel a sense of longing to know that our contributions to life will outlive us, that we were put here not just to meet our own needs, but also to nurture and protect the growth and welfare of other human beings. Having and raising children answers that impulse. That the purpose of life is to be fruitful and multiply, to create more life.

An eternity without God is deprived of life and love. And so parenting without God too often regresses into animal instinct. You care for your offspring until they can fend for themselves, and then they’re on their own.

But there is so much more to parenting, just as there is so much more to God. You are meant to bear fruit that will thrive and flourish beyond your span of days.

And your children can be reflections of eternity.

“Look up at the sky and count the stars—if indeed you can count them.” Then he said to him, “So shall your offspring be.”
