Holding Fast To What Is Good
Holding Fast to What Is Good
How you love your current family will be shaped by your connection to the family of your childhood. It will often shape who you choose for a spouse and your view of love.
If a son was nurtured by a mother of virtue, he’ll often pursue a wife of similar caliber. If a little girl saw her father constantly scream at her mother, she may unwittingly choose a man who will scream at her too. If you were disciplined by reasonable parents, you’ll likely pass this discipline style on to your own children.
You must recognize this connection and alert yourself to any existing misinterpretations of love. You should also affirm what was good about your upbringing and then negotiate with your spouse—who is similarly influenced by his or her childhood—to decide upon the best standard of love for your family.
Some connections should be upheld. Some broken. What matters is that you hold on to what is good.
Test all things; hold fast what is good. —1 Thessalonians 5:21 NKJV
