WANTED: Someone who understands me. Someone who will go with me to my favorite store even when they’d rather be somewhere else. Someone who won’t talk when I want to be alone but will let me cuddle at a moment’s notice. Someone who’ll forgive me when I’m wrong and give me a break when I’m grumpy. I just need someone. Anyone. Please!
Such an ad would scare away most people, but it’s probably more representative of true romance than poetic words and flowers could ever be.
What’s the romance most people are searching for? It’s sharing life together. It’s loving someone for who he or she is and being loved the same way. More than finding someone physically attractive, you want to find him or her attractive because he or she is pursuing a life that matters. Really, you’re in search of a romance in which someone matters to you and you matter to him or her.
Try not to scare people away in your search, but don’t lower your standards in choosing the one who will matter most.
I am my beloved’s and my beloved is mine. —Song of Songs 6:3
