Talk, Talk, Talk
Talk, Talk, Talk
On an individual, parent-to-child level, perhaps the best thing you can do is talk. And talk. And talk some more.
This should start when your kids are very young. Read to them all the time. Engage them in their play. Ask them what they’re thinking, and allow them to express their emotions. Most children will love to express themselves if asked.
As they grow older, kids may start to lose interest, but that’s why you need to talk every day. If you start early and make it a normal activity, you’ll build intimacy and trust that will last into the teenage years and beyond.
And when you talk, make sure you listen. These are human beings who deserve respect as much as they deserve nurturing and discipline. The more you listen, the more they’ll ask for your guidance and the more they’ll respect you and your authority.
If you want your children to pay attention, then from their earliest years, give them yours.
“See that you do not despise one of these little ones. For I tell you that their angels in heaven always see the face of my Father in heaven.” —Matthew 18:10
