The Freedom to Choose

In the movie Saving Private Ryan, Ryan watches a man dying at his feet. The dying man has traveled through war-torn country to find him and to make sure he gets home to his family. He’s accomplished his task but has given his life to do so. His last words to Ryan are, “Earn this.”

What would you do if someone gave his life for you in this way? You’d probably feel compelled to make something of yourself. To make choices that matter. After all, your life was bought with a price.

The freedom that matters was also bought with a price. God’s Son traveled through war-torn country to find you and died so you could live in freedom. You can’t earn this kind of freedom, but you can live in a way that honors the One who gave it to you.

You’ve been given the freedom to choose. Live for yourself or live for Him.

For Christ’s love compels us. . . . He died for all, that those who live should no longer live for themselves but for him who died for them and was raised again. —2 Corinthians 5:14–15
