To Know and Be Known

What is romance? Shared experience. Attraction. Feeling valued. Affection. Forgiveness. All these things. But ultimately, it is about knowing and being known.

Who knows more about you than your spouse? Your secrets. Your fears. Every little weakness. Every strength. And you know the same about your spouse. If you read a King James Bible, the word knowing is used for sexual relations. To know someone is to become one physically. But your mutual knowing is also emotional. It’s spiritual. It’s the best example of how we’re meant to know intimacy with God.

True romance never happens without sacrifice. For a marriage to matter, you must each sacrifice your own way in order to become one. Likewise, Jesus sacrificed Himself so you could become one with God—a knowing, a communion that lasts for eternity.

Two lives join as one and create more life. There’s no greater romance than that.

Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known. And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love. —1 Corinthians 13:12–13
