A prayer about Letting Go

When I hold on too tightly

MY LORD,

I need to move on, to let go of the past and live in the present, preparing for the future. This seems to be a difficult process for me, and I’m not sure why. Maybe because times are tough and my problems are complex with no solutions in sight, I yearn for an idealized past. Or perhaps I just find the act of letting go difficult. I can hold on in relationships, too. I remember wanting my parents to let me grow up. But now I can hold others back, seeing them as immature or refusing to forgive a past offense. This reveals my lack of trust in you, Lord. I need to release and move on. Please forgive me. The world doesn’t depend on me, but on you. I know you are good and you love me, so I need to trust you with each step forward, for my happiness and security. I need to hold everything—relationships, possessions, finances, dreams—very loosely, ready to release them at the right time. Give me the resolve and strength to let go.

Remember what happened to Lot’s wife! If you cling to your life, you will lose it, and if you let your life go, you will save it. Luke 17:32-33
