Joy In The Waiting

“And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them.” (Romans 8:28; NLT)

“Those who live only to satisfy their own sinful nature will harvest decay and death from that sinful nature. But those who live to please the Spirit will harvest everlasting life from the Spirit. So let’s not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don’t give up. Therefore, whenever we have the opportunity, we should do good to everyone—especially to those in the family of faith.” (Galatians 6:8-10, NLT)

Chasing the next thing, even when it’s a good or worthy pursuit, will never result in lasting contentment. In a world that constantly encourages us to move faster and achieve more, it can feel like the answer to our restlessness lies just around the corner. We think that the next promotion, the next relationship, the next adventure, or the next accomplishment will bring us the peace and fulfillment we crave. But time and time again, these pursuits leave us wanting more, empty, and unsatisfied.

Scripture reminds us that if we sow in the flesh, focusing on things that are temporary and have no eternal value, we will reap emptiness. But if we sow in the Spirit, focusing on eternal things, we will reap joy and fulfillment that nothing in this world can offer (Galatians 6:8-10). The world’s version of happiness is fleeting, but God’s version of abundant life is found in Christ alone (John 10:10).

Our joy doesn’t come from perfect circumstances, nor does it depend on whether we are always moving forward or achieving the next goal. True joy is found in abiding in Jesus. He is the source of our peace, our fulfillment, and our rest. Waiting can feel frustrating, even agonizing at times, but it is not wasted. In the midst of waiting, God holds opportunities for growth and deeper intimacy with him. Waiting, though challenging, can be the very space in which God refines us and draws us closer to his heart.

How do we anchor ourselves to biblical joy when circumstances seem unchanging or hopeless? Here are three ways to find joy in the midst of waiting:

1. The Word: The enemy loves to fill our hearts with despair, especially during seasons of waiting by whispering lies that we are forgotten. But God’s Word is full of reminders of his unchanging faithfulness. When we spend time in the Word, it becomes the steady foundation we stand on in our seasons of longing. The truths in God’s Word remind us of his provision, love, and faithfulness. They help us hold on when everything around us feels uncertain. The more we meditate on his Word, the more we grow in our trust in him.
2. God’s Character: Seek to know God more deeply. In moments of waiting, we can feel as though God is distant or unaware of our struggles. But as we fix our eyes on him, we discover more of his love, his goodness, and his care for us. God is not distant; he is near to us, and he desires to walk alongside us in every moment. Understanding who God is helps us trust him, even when our circumstances don’t seem to change. His goodness is never in question, no matter what season we’re in.
3. God’s Presence: The Holy Spirit dwells within us, offering comfort, guidance, and peace. He strengthens us to endure, enabling us to experience biblical joy even in the most difficult seasons. The presence of God is not dependent on our circumstances. In him, we find the strength to endure and the joy that transcends our earthly circumstances.

The enemy wants to rob us of joy, telling us that God has forgotten us or that he is withholding good things from us. But we see in Scripture that “For those who love God all things work together for good” (Romans 8:28, ESV). Even when joy feels distant or when it seems like things are not going the way we hoped, God is actively working on our behalf. Sometimes, despair can even be a gift—a reminder to shift our gaze to Jesus, to look up from our circumstances, and to find joy in His presence.

Prayer

Lord, I am weary from focusing on my circumstances and letting despair cloud my heart. Help me lift my eyes to you and remember that my joy is found in your presence, not in temporary things. Strengthen my faith as I wait and root me deeply in your Word. Teach me more about your character so I can rest in your goodness. Holy Spirit, guide me in every step and fill me with joy that overflows, regardless of what I face. I trust you and choose to live with joy in your promises. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
