I Don’t Get It!

God has made everything beautiful for its own time. He has planted eternity in the human heart, but even so, people cannot see the whole scope of God’s work from beginning to end.

ECCLESIASTES 3:11

“I DON’T ‘GET’ GOD. I have heard that statement from teens, seniors, and everyone in between. There are times when we don’t understand why God does what he does; we don’t find the logic of his timing; and we don’t comprehend some basic tenets of the faith, like the Trinity or free will and God’s sovereignty. God is “ungetable.”

What we need to get is, we can’t “get God.” If we could, then he wouldn’t be God—he’d be like us. Isaiah 64:4 says that “since the world began, no ear has heard, and no eye has seen a God like you, who works for those who wait for him!” If since the beginning of time, no one else has seen a God who compares with him, how can we think we can?

If we could fully understand him, he wouldn’t be God. Solomon, the wisest man who ever lived, acknowledged that he couldn’t understand God either: “No one can discover everything God is doing under the sun. Not even the wisest people discover everything, no matter what they claim” (Ecclesiastes 8:17).

He is bigger, stronger, wiser, and completely different from us. We need a God we can’t get, because then he can give what we so desperately need.
