It’s All About Me

We do this by keeping our eyes on Jesus, the champion who initiates and perfects our faith. Because of the joy awaiting him, he endured the cross, disregarding its shame. Now he is seated in the place of honor beside God’s throne.

“I NEVER GET TIME FOR me. . . . I thought it was time to spend money on me. . . . I deserve something for me. . . . I needed to have the plastic surgery for me. . . . No, I can’t come to Bible study—I need to do more for me. . . . It is my turn. . . . I need to find myself.”

Me, myself, and I. When I start hearing those words repeated in every conversation I have with a woman, I fear she is headed for disaster. It is interesting that selfishness is translated “strife” in the KJV, and in Greek it means “contention.” Nothing good comes to mind with those words!

While it is important and necessary that a woman discover her gifts, use her talents, and understand who she is, too many women turn to self-centered pursuits on their journey of discovery. The danger in making life “all about you” is that you will often succeed. A life that is egocentric—centered on fulfilling your hopes, dreams, and goals regardless of the price—becomes an empty life.

Your husband may patiently endure, but his heart will detach emotionally. Your children, no matter their age, will pick up on the vibes that you and your needs are a higher priority than they are and their needs. Soon they, too, will look for others to meet their emotional needs.

A woman who thinks she can solve her emotional pain by turning inward is a woman on a lonely journey. Friends, family, and coworkers will get your message loud and clear: Leave me alone. Let me live my life! They will let you, and your world will shrink down to one.

Take your pain, questions, and need for personal space or identity and look up, not in. God will answer your heart cry. Listen to yourself this week. How often do you hear, “Me, myself, or I?”
