Every human has one important thing in common: No one knows how much time he or she has left on this earth. It could be one day or a thousand. But whether you’ve been told you have only days to live, or you’re enjoying robust health, each of us should learn how to make our life count for eternity.

Speaking to those who have faced the challenge of cancer, theologian and pastor John Piper wrote, “Satan’s designs and God’s designs . . . are not the same. Satan designs to destroy our love for Christ. God designs to deepen our love for Christ. Cancer does not win if we die. It wins if we fail to cherish Christ.”^a The point here isn’t about cancer; it’s about learning to live in such a way that every hardship helps us to focus on eternity. Our days, no matter how long or short, are opportunities to know Christ better and to invest in the life to come.

I ask, Lord, that You help me make the most of my time, the most of my days, and the most of my opportunities to know You, walk with You, and accomplish Your desire for my life. Paul was right—compared to the surpassing worth of knowing You, everything else is loss.^b
