A Spectacle Of Glory #53

A Spectacle of Glory #53

Read: 1 Kings 18:27

On a dry hilltop, in a classic confrontation between Baal and the God of Israel, the prophet Elijah exposed an imitation god that could never really hear or help anyone. “Shout louder!” Elijah taunted. “Surely he is a god! Perhaps he is deep in thought, or busy, or traveling. Maybe he is sleeping and must be awakened.” We might cheer on Elijah here, but have you ever thought something similar? What about those dry and weary times in prayer when you wonder if God is listening at all? Do you ever imagine Him off in another part of the universe, busy with this or that, and paying little attention to your cries?

The truth is, He is never too busy! Your God is constant, and—whether or not you feel like it—you have His undivided attention. He never takes a nap, never becomes distracted, and never forgets even the smallest details of your concerns.

Lord, I guess this has been one of those times when I feel a little distant from You. Your comfort seems over the horizon somewhere, and discouragement presses in on me. Today, I declare by faith that You are with me, as close and attentive and loving as You have ever been. I choose to rest in this strong reality.
