Beautiful Word Devotional #129
I lift up my eyes to the mountains—where does my help come from? My help comes from the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth.
Psalm 121:1–2
A quick geography lesson will help us better understand this psalm.
Palestine is a mountainous land, and Jerusalem sits on top of a hill. There God made his presence known first in the tabernacle and then in the temple. In that setting, as he walked up toward Jerusalem, the psalmist praised God. The psalmist knew that mountains and hills don’t—can’t!—save us, but that our powerful God will help when we need him.
Do you doubt God’s power? His is the power of creation as well as protection and deliverance. Look around you. He made every mountain, stream, ocean, bird, fish, animal, domesticated and wild, as well as air, water, and every other thing that exists.
This Creator God also made you, and he absolutely loves you. While you may feel as small and insignificant as a molehill, your mountain-forming God loves you and will protect and deliver you.
Lord, I lift my eyes to you with confidence in your strength and your faithfulness. . . and gratitude for your goodness and your protection, amen.
