Do not be stiffnecked, as your ancestors were; submit to the LORD.

2 Chronicles 30:8

To be stiff-necked is to be stubborn. It’s making the choice to only do things our way, without advice or assistance from anyone else. Basically, stiff-necked people act as if they know everything there is to know about a situation.

No one likes hanging out with a stiff-necked individual. There is no real interaction, no two-way communication

The Lord doesn’t want us to be stiff-necked. He wants us to realize that we don’t know everything there is to know about our lives. He wants us to be different from the Israelites who went their own way again and again—and always ended up in a heap of trouble.

God’s instruction to the stiff-necked and to you and me is simple: submit. To submit is to acknowledge that God is God and you are not, that his ways are better than yours. A submissive believer actively seeks God’s counsel and then does what God says to do.

So, where are you on the stiff-necked meter today?

Lord, I don’t want be stiff-necked! Instead, I choose today to submit to you in everything—and I ask you to help me, amen.
