Beautiful Word Devotional #187

“Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”

Matthew 6:21

In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus told about a man who found a treasure and then sold everything he owned to buy the field where the treasure was buried.

Treasure is what you value most. Treasure is often beautiful and always costly. And many things vie for that status in our hearts and our lives. What do you treasure?

We can chase the wrong treasure in this life. That happens when we wrongly believe that this life is all we have, so we grab everything we can. We go after treasures like fame, money, position, and power. If we live for those earthly treasures, we will never know better and eternal treasure.

Jesus called us to “store up for yourselves treasures in heaven” (v. 20). What does that look like? When we speak and act with love, compassion, gospel truth, kindness, peace, and joy, we are storing up treasures in heaven. We are investing in treasures of eternal value, not the world’s treasures that will turn to dust.

Lord, please teach me more about what it looks like to store up my treasure in heaven, amen.
