Beautiful Word Devotional #211
As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.
Proverbs 27:17
We Christ followers need each other—that’s the heartbeat of today’s verse. We cannot grow spiritually in isolation. Hiding out in a mountain cabin will never help us become the people God wants us to be. He designed us to be in relationship—with him and with others. One of the good things that happens in such a community of believers is sharpening each other.
When you want to sharpen a knife, you need another piece of metal called a sharpening stone. You can’t use wood or glass to sharpen a knife. It needs a similar form to make it sharp, and that is true for us. We need each other to smooth our rough edges (which we may be blind to) and sharpen our effectiveness for when we serve in God’s kingdom.
Yes, metal on metal can mean sparks fly. And that’s okay. Consider it progress!
Lord, please put people in my life who will keep me sharp and make me sharper—and use me to sharpen them, all for your glory, amen.
