Beautiful Word Devotional #307

“Abba, Father,” he said, “everything is possible for you. Take this cup from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will.”

Mark 14:36

In this intimate snapshot of his agonizing prayer, Jesus called the Almighty God “Daddy” (Abba).

Looming before Jesus was the cross—an instrument of torture and death. Even darker was the pall of the sin he would bear. That sin would weigh down his sinless soul and—for the first time in eternity past—separate him from his Abba.

So of course Jesus asked Daddy to deliver him.

But Daddy was silent. This sacrificial death of his only Son was essential to his plan to rescue humanity from the grips of sin, Satan, and death. The Son must fulfill his mission.

Jesus sweated drops of blood as he continued to pray and beg for a different solution. He knew the cup that awaited would bring unimaginable pain—physical, emotional, and spiritual. Yet Jesus chose obedience. He chose his Daddy’s will, not his human will. And because Jesus did that, you can live in relationship with your heavenly Daddy.

Lord, thank you. Thank you for your truly amazing grace, amen.
