Grief - Bible Promises for Moms
Grief
Grief is real, and it is relentless sometimes. As a pastor’s wife, I have witnessed grief as it rips through families and into the hearts of parents—but I never understood how God works in the deep places of grief until it hit my family through the pain of abandonment. Some years ago I had a close family member who walked away from the Lord and our family simultaneously. Until that day I had never experienced grief like that. I couldn’t stop crying, and it felt like my heart was literally breaking when I saw the destruction and pain that were left in the wake of this person’s selfish choice. But at the darkest moment of my grief, I remembered that my Savior was familiar with my pain. The Bible tells us that Jesus was a man acquainted with sorrows. He, too, had been betrayed. He, too, had seen the destruction and pain that sin causes. Did knowing that make the pain stop instantly? No, of course not, but I felt His presence more closely after that.
Grief is a part of love. The more intensely we love, the more intensely we experience grief, whether at a failed pregnancy, the stillbirth of a child, the loss of a family member, or the dissolution of a marriage when a spouse simply walks away. But Jesus meets us in our suffering, and in Him we can find fellowship and peace even in the midst of that suffering. I wouldn’t want to experience that grief and pain again, but I will be forever grateful for the ways in which the Lord comforted me during that season.
WHEN YOU NEED TO KNOW GOD IS NEAR YOU IN YOUR SUFFERING . . .
The LORD is close to the brokenhearted;
he rescues those whose spirits are crushed.
WHEN YOU WONDER IF YOU WILL EVER FIND JOY AGAIN . . .
You have sorrow now, but I will see you again; then you will rejoice, and no one can rob you of that joy.
WHEN YOU NEED SUPERNATURAL STRENGTH IN THE MIDST OF GRIEF . . .
My health may fail, and my spirit may grow weak,
but God remains the strength of my heart;
he is mine forever.
WHEN YOUR GRIEF MAKES YOU FEEL FAR AWAY FROM GOD . . .
I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love. No power in the sky above or in the earth below—indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord.
