A few years ago, David and I traveled through a Middle Eastern country. At that particular time and in that particular country, some of the local citizens were very hostile to American tourists.

One day, we walked slowly through a small marketplace and turned down a very crowded street. People, animals, and merchandise were jammed into this narrow side street. Tensions began to rise as people began bumping into one another. As David and I worked our way toward the exit, the crowd shifted, and we were suddenly forced into the oncoming traffic of people. We stumbled as we attempted to regain our composure, but bumped into several “ladies of the city,” who cursed at us and gave us hateful looks. One of the women actually shoved me back into place and yelled something hostile at David.

After those moments of insecurity overseas, all I could think about was how I wanted to be back home with David. I realized then that I had taken for granted how safe I felt at home.

Marriage is supposed to be a place of safety. No matter what you run into on the outside, you should feel the approval you need when you get home. No matter how people treat you “out there,” at home you should feel confident that God and your spouse are pleased with you.

What a secure place to be—at home with God and with my spouse! That’s the kind of environment we all need to create for our spouses. It’s the kind of environment that produces true security and true marital intimacy.
