Creator, Father, King #147

The Most High rules over the kingdoms of the world. He gives them to anyone he chooses—even to the lowliest of people.

Proverbs 16:18 SAYS, “Pride goes before destruction, and haughtiness before a fall.” In King Nebuchadnezzar’s case, pride went before grass-grazing and a complete disregard for personal grooming habits.

Perhaps an explanation is needed.

Nebuchadnezzar was one of the ancient world’s greatest emperors. During his reign (605–562 BC), he brought the Babylonian Empire to its greatest height, conquering other nations and building the city of Babylon into a world-class metropolis.

But Nebuchadnezzar grew quite conceited over his accomplishments. One day, God cautioned Nebuchadnezzar to repent of his great pride through a unique dream—which Daniel interpreted for him—or else he would be driven insane. But Nebuchadnezzar ignored the divine warning.

One year later, as he was strolling on his palace rooftop, he boasted, “Look at this great city of Babylon! By my own mighty power, I have built this beautiful city as my royal residence to display my majestic splendor” (Daniel 4:30).

Instantly, God’s judgment fell on him. For a long time, “he ate grass like a cow, and he was drenched with the dew of heaven. He lived this way until his hair was as long as eagles’ feathers and his nails were like birds’ claws” (verse 33).

The great king—deprived of all sanity—had been completely humbled.

What’s It Mean?

Nebuchadnezzar was an incredibly powerful ruler. God even used him as an instrument of punishment against his own people, the Jews, for their idolatrous rebellion. But like any other mighty king—righteous or pagan—Nebuchadnezzar was completely under God’s control (Proverbs 21:1). When he didn’t give glory to God, he learned the truth of today’s verse in an unforgettable way: “The Most High rules over the kingdoms of the world.”

Today’s world is a much different place. But God still reigns supreme. This should provide great peace and hope as you hear about troubling national and world events.

As Daniel testified earlier in his book, God “controls the course of world events; he removes kings and sets up other kings” (2:21). The world might seem out of control, but God is working all things according to his sovereign purpose.

Don’t hold your breath waiting for wicked world leaders to go insane and start eating grass, though! Rather, trust in the almighty God who rules over all the affairs of mankind.

Nebuchadnezzar’s sanity was eventually restored. He returned to the throne, praising God (Daniel 4:34-37).
