By faith we understand that the universe was created by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things that are visible.

WHERE DID THE UNIVERSE come from? How did life begin? What is the origin of everything?

For the last three days, we have been discussing biblical Creation—how God created the universe by speaking powerful words. It’s the doctrine of ex nihilo—“out of nothing.”

The Bible says that in the beginning, there was only the trinitarian God—Father, Son, and Spirit. Then, God commanded light to appear, and an expanse between the waters and dry land to come forth, then vegetation, planetary bodies, and finally the animal kingdom and humans. The six days of biblical creation is one of the foundations of Christianity.

Does it take faith to believe this? Absolutely. But that’s exactly what God’s Word calls us to. Just look at today’s verse.

What’s It Mean?

Simply defined, faith is believing without seeing. No human being was alive at the beginning of the world. Yet Hebrews 11:3 (and the rest of Scripture) calls us to believe that the one true God of the Bible—not a Big Bang, a microscopic organism in a primordial soup, a pantheon of lesser gods, or any other alternate force—began the universe. This is what the Bible testifies to, and so we must believe. You cannot please God without faith (Hebrews 11:6).

Funny as it sounds, the theory of evolution takes great faith too. Think about it: How else is someone to believe that our incredibly beautiful, detailed, and orderly universe began by a fluke of nature and continues to function by sheer evolutionary randomness? And where, by the way, did those first microscopic particles involved in the Big Bang come from? This is a something-from-nothing argument, which has never proven possible in the natural world . . . unless, however, a greater power—or Being—exists who can create something from nothing.

Look around you. Watch a butterfly in fluttery flight or a squirrel hunting for acorns. Consider the clockwork nature and wonderful variety of the meteorological seasons. Or the way the moon’s gravitational pull affects ocean tides. Try to find two matching snowflakes or both ends of a rainbow.

Do you see a world thrown together by the impersonal, emotionless evolutionary force of randomness and chance? Or a world of beauty and order, designed by a loving Creator?

By faith, believe that the universe was created by God!
