Daily Power #109

“My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the LORD. (Isa. 55:8)

When I joined the tennis team in college, I had to get used to my Aussie teammates’ manner of speaking. I realized pretty quickly that the English they spoke was not the same English I spoke!

Sometimes even people who speak the same language still can’t communicate. We hear each other, but we struggle to listen and hear the message being conveyed. I knew nothing about footie, “Waltzing Matilda,” or wallabies, and they weren’t always willing to stop and explain every little reference or meaning.

Sometimes I wonder whether our prayers seem just as curious and strange to God. Of course, he understands us and knows our hearts. But it must be hard to hear us pray one thing and then say and do another. Because we’re so limited by what we can see with our eyes, we tend to rely on the physical world as the basis for our understanding. We’re still sinful despite having been saved by Christ. As a result, our prayer language may seem very limited.

Nonetheless, God hears us and knows what we are not even able to put into words. With his Spirit dwelling in us, we can communicate fully with our Father—despite our sinful mistakes or those times when we can’t understand what God’s doing.

Prayer isn’t just asking; it’s also trusting.

Power Lift

Lord, I can’t always understand why you do what you’re doing, but I don’t need to. Today I’m reminded that I can trust you regardless of my limited perspective.
