You are my hiding place; you will protect me from trouble and surround me with songs of deliverance. (Ps. 32:7)

Each year in Oklahoma, we average more than fifty tornados, typically resulting in multiple fatalities. As you would imagine, we’re trained and prepared for the kind of severe weather that often produces those twisters. We conduct drills regularly—in our homes, schools, businesses, even churches. If you live here, you learn quickly how to look for a safe place and take shelter.

Our lives often feel just as unpredictable and dangerous. Our circumstances can change overnight, relationships fracture and break, and unimaginable obstacles crash into us. If only it were as easy as looking for a storm shelter like the ones we have in Oklahoma.

Where do you go when you’re overwhelmed, weary, anxious, afraid, and unsettled? What’s the first thing you do when you see trouble headed your way?

God is our shield and protector, our rock and our shelter. No matter what calamity, natural disaster, personal crisis, or devastating loss we face, we can run to him. When you pray and spend time alone with him, you create a safe place where you can always return.

Because we live in a sinful, fallen world, you can be sure that you will face trials, temptations, and tragedies. But God will always be your hiding place. The winds of change and attacks of the Enemy cannot harm you there in his arms. He wants to hold you close and remind you of his power, strength, and sovereignty.

Let him.

Lord, thank you for being my rock, my hiding place. I am so grateful for having a safe place in your arms. When storms come my way, I will run to you.
