Daily Power #258

The one who does not love does not know God, for God is love. (1 John 4:8 NASB)

Growing up, I was a serious baseball fan. One of my favorite players was Kansas City Royals’ third baseman, George Brett. His 3,154 career base hits topped any other third baseman in history. And in 1980, Brett almost batted .400, finishing the season at a modern-day record of .390. In case you’re not into baseball, that’s an amazing record.

As a fan, I knew all about my hero, but I didn’t know him. Until one day in college, I was playing in Kansas City for the National Collegiate Tennis Championship. Walking by a nice outdoor restaurant, I glanced up, and live and in the flesh—there he was. George Brett was eating a burger. Wow, I thought, he even eats hamburgers.

Without hesitation, I approached him and spurted off all the stats I knew about him. One of his buddies, obviously used to strangers like me approaching, tried to encourage me to leave, but George stopped him. “You know all that about me?” he said. “Why don’t you sit down for a minute and tell me about you?”

And that’s how I got to know George Brett.

So many people know “about God” but don’t really know him. They may attend a church, know some Bible verses, and even have a cross tattoo. But they don’t know him intimately. There is a big difference between knowing about someone and truly knowing him.

Today take time to get to know him better. Seek God. Listen for his voice. Open your heart to his Word. He wants to show himself to you. He wants you to know him as he knows you.

Lord, I’m grateful that you are a personal God and want me to know you, not just worship and serve you. Draw me closer to you so I can know you even better.
