Daily Power #304

“And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.” (Matt. 6:13)

Sometimes it’s hard to resist the attention we get when we do the right thing. We help someone, give more than expected, stretch beyond our comfort zone. And when others notice, it has to feel good. Even though we don’t want to become prideful and self-righteous, the temptation is there. And the more others notice, the more likely we are to think we’re doing a great job.

Ironically, the best way to avoid this trap is to allow others to see our weaknesses and shortcomings. When we are transparent in appropriate ways, those around us get to see that God is the one accomplishing his purposes through us. It’s not that we’re perfect or extraordinary or superstars. It’s simply that we serve a holy, amazing, stellar God.

This kind of honest vulnerability often illustrates a godly life more than any attention-getting good deed. We can shine the light of Christ in our dark world without making it a fireworks show. The glow of one lone flame is more than enough to illuminate the darkest night.

When we share our struggles and weaknesses with others, we also remain humble and dependent on God. We resist taking credit for anything but our availability for God to use us. Such admissions keep us grounded and make us more approachable and identifiable for nonbelievers, and more encouraging and real for other Christians.

Today let others know what God is doing through you.
