We love because he first loved us. (1 John 4:19)
When I was dating in college, I tried to guard my heart by making sure I never needed any girl as much as I wanted her to need me. When I became a Christian, everything changed, especially my dating habits. So when I met my future wife, Amy, I quickly realized how much I needed her in my life. Fortunately, she felt the same way. We discovered how much we both needed each other, and it didn’t matter who loved whom first.
With God, though, it’s easy to see: we’re able to love because he loved us first. It’s not just that we need him and are created to be in relationship with him. It’s simply a natural response when we experience his love for us. Even when it doesn’t make sense to us, God loves us as his sons and daughters. He desires a relationship with us—so much so that he made the ultimate sacrifice, his only Son.
If you want to love others with the love of Jesus, then always make sure your heart is plugged into God’s heart. He is your power source for loving even those people who at first may seem hard to love. We all need our Father’s love, and he allows us the privilege of serving one another.

Dear God, help me to love others the way you love me. Allow me to demonstrate your patience, compassion, and mercy to everyone I see today.
