Daily Power #58

Whoever is kind to the needy honors God. (Prov. 14:31)

Depending on our present circumstances, we usually don’t consider ourselves as being needy—you know, like those people in really tough situations with nowhere to turn. Like homeless people or those in crisis, the ones caught up in domestic dysfunction or addictions who so obviously need help.

But here’s the truth: we are all needy. No matter how hard we work to disguise our needs and appear self-sufficient, we need the support, encouragement, and assistance of other people. As a guy, I especially don’t want to appear as if I need anybody’s help. Instead I want to be seen like Jason Bourne or Jack Reacher—tough guys who can handle anything, and anyone, all by themselves. Guys who don’t need help from other people—ever.

However, those guys exist only in the movies.

God designed us not to be robotic action heroes but to be men and women with strong character and tender hearts. He made us as relational and social beings, to need each other so we can help each other. Whether it’s money for groceries or encouragement to ask for a promotion, our sense of interdependency reflects the way God made us. He doesn’t expect us to have everything together and take care of ourselves alone. He created us to be in relationships as part of a larger community.

Sometimes you need to let your guard down and allow others to see how much you really need them.

Lord, I know that I always need you, even when circumstances seem to be going well. Help me to serve others but also to receive what I need as you provide it through them.
