Daily Power #99

“Give us today our daily bread.” (Matt. 6:11)

Years ago when my kids were small, they begged me to get a dog. Now, I’ve always loved dogs, but at the time we simply had too many pets—hamsters, birds, fish, cats (and I don’t even like cats). But my kids wouldn’t let it go, so I said, “I’ll tell you what, kids. You pray, and if God provides the right dog, I’ll consider it.”

My kids had the most passionate prayer meeting you’ve ever seen—it made Pentecost look small! They gathered, they got on their knees, they took turns praying, and they stayed with it. I could’ve been fighting for my life in the hospital, and I don’t think they would’ve prayed as long as they prayed for that dog.

The next day when I came home from work, all six of them were out at the end of our driveway to greet me. They were jumping up and down, high-fiving each other, laughing, and squealing with joy. I got out and asked my son Sam, who was about seven then, “What’s going on, little buddy?” His eyes got so big as he said, “Daddy! It worked! God heard our prayer and sent us a dog!”

I couldn’t believe it. We lived out in the middle of nowhere, and apparently someone had abandoned a puppy and an angel of the Lord had guided him to our house—or something along those lines. And that’s how we ended up with Sadie, the perfect dog for our family. I’m still in awe—God answered the prayer of my children, because it mattered to them.
