Faithful Is He

If we are faithless, He remains faithful; He cannot deny Himself.

2 Timothy 2:13

In 1947, Dr. Chandrasekhar, professor of astrophysics at the University of Chicago, was scheduled to teach an advanced seminar. He lived in Wisconsin at the time, but he planned to drive in the dead of winter twice a week to the class. When only two students signed up for the class, everyone expected him to cancel. But all winter, twice a week, he made the 100-mile trip—for two students, each of whom later won the Nobel Prize.

Dr. Chandrasekhar, a Nobel Prize winner himself, displayed one of God’s characteristics: faithfulness. The response or commitment of the students did not dictate his actions. He had promised to teach the class, and that is what he did—and that is how God relates to us. God is faithful regardless of our attitudes or actions. Even when we are faithless—when we have no faith—He is faithful. God’s faithfulness is based in His character and revealed in His promises. For instance, when we sin, “He is faithful and just to forgive us” (1 John 1:9).

Faithfulness is acting like God regardless of how others act toward us.
