Spouses Who Never Give In

Therefore, what God has joined together, let no one separate.

On October 29, 1941, when England was being mercilessly attacked by German rockets and planes, Winston Churchill visited his alma mater. A verse honoring him had been added to one of the school songs; it spoke of “darker days.” Churchill asked that it be changed to “sterner days.” The days of the war were stern but not dark, he said. Churchill was committed to seeing the light of England’s glory shine yet again.

Many marriages today are under attack by enemies such as discouragement, infidelity, unforgiveness, and bitterness. Spouses find themselves wandering through dark days, ready to declare defeat. What they need is a Churchill-like, biblical kind of commitment and perseverance. Marriages can go through stern days without entering dark nights if the partners enter their marriage committed to defeating any enemy that comes against them. When your marriage encounters a stern enemy, recommit yourself to your spouse—and never give up.

Don’t be committed to commitment. Be committed to the one you told “’til death do us part.”
