Sunday And Beyond

I beseech you . . . that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God.

Romans 12:1

Since the Reformation, Protestant churches have included two sacraments in their worship: baptism and the Lord’s Supper. In both of these observances, the Christian worships with his body, physically participating in the ordinances of the Lord.

In the Old Testament, believers worshiped with their bodies by bringing offerings to the Lord as sacrifices and by participating in the various festivals throughout the Jewish year. Participation in appointed worship is important, but the New Testament gives a brand-new mandate to Christians: take your worship beyond the meeting of the church. Instead of only participating in sacraments, become a sacrament. Instead of bringing a sacrifice to God, be the sacrifice.

Offer your whole life to God in daily service. Like Jesus, there shouldn’t be a time when we aren’t serving the Lord (John 5:19; 8:28). Make a conscious effort this week to view every day as “the Lord’s day.” Instead of looking for a sacrifice to bring, look for ways to live sacrificially for Christ.

Think of the impact on the world if every Christian began worshiping God every day of the week.
