The Twelve Spies

Caleb quieted the people before Moses, and said, “Let us go up at once and take possession, for we are well able to overcome it.”

Numbers 13:30

During Operation Iraqi Freedom, U.S. Army Special Forces operated inside Iraq well in advance of the war, and American spy agencies had operatives in place long before the first missile was fired. In impending war, “human assets” are critical, and that’s why Moses sent twelve men to spy out Canaan in advance of the anticipated invasion by the children of Israel.

In this case, however, the human assets became liabilities. Ten spies returned with daunting tales of giants, walled cities, and overwhelming foes. Only two—Joshua and Caleb—had a faith-based perspective. The ten compared themselves with the giants; the two compared the giants with God. Rather than aiding the victory, the ten spies discouraged the people.

Are you facing challenges today? Do you have some giant problems? Don’t be discouraged. Don’t compare yourself with the giants; compare the giants with God. He has promised victory in advance. Though the future appears daunting, you have a divine Commander in Chief who does all things well. Trust Him, for with Him you are well able to overcome.
