Why Worship?

Because He is your Lord, worship Him.

Psalm 45:11

An old gospel song goes like this:

Jesus, I’ll never forget what You’ve done for me,

Jesus, I’ll never forget how You set me free,

Jesus, I’ll never forget how You brought me out,

Jesus, I’ll never forget, no never!

The song goes on to proclaim, “He’s done so much for me, I cannot tell it all, He’s taken all my sins away!”

Whether we worship God for His attributes (who He is) or His actions (what He has done), worship is our response to Him. Worship is a measure of our perception, appreciation, or understanding of who God is and what He has done.

When a child erupts with squeals of delight and hugs of affection upon receiving a surprise, we are seeing the response of joy. In a similar way, because God’s mercies are new every morning to us (Lamentations 3:22–23), we have good reason never to stop worshiping Him. A good exercise for the Christian is to spend some time remembering the things God has done, which flow from who He is. If we consider carefully, we will agree with the songwriter: “He’s done so much for me, I cannot tell it all.”

To remember God’s greatness and goodness is to respond with a heart of gratitude.
