Devotions: Don’t Be Distracted
Devotions: Don’t Be Distracted
“Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, but only one thing is needed.”
Luke 10:41-42
Life demands its pound of flesh. Myriad responsibilities rip away at our time and energy just as the clacking teeth of a pack of ravenous wolves tears apart fresh meat.
So many things must be done to get ready for tomorrow. The press of daily living easily distracts us from Jesus. “Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made” (v. 40).
What is the needed thing? The errand or time with Christ? The laundry or praying with the Lord? The early morning business appointment or meeting with Jesus?
Only one thing is needed. No matter how urgent the responsibility, your private watch with Christ is most important. Don’t be worried about many things when only the one thing is needed. Whatever the distraction, come apart to be with Jesus. Don’t be distracted by the press of daily life. Whatever the responsibility, postpone it, or let someone else handle it.
When Jesus is with us, no other activity, chore, or duty is worth the doing. They are distractions. It is better to be with Jesus. During those moments when you come into His presence, seize the moment. Be late for your appointment if you must, but don’t be distracted from Jesus. Don’t shirk your responsibilities, but neither miss the needed thing. If you can meet Him in prayer right now, then shut your door and shut out the world and don’t be distracted.
When you come out of your room, you will be a person not easily upset, not easily distracted, more resolute, more effective in whatever was postponed because the power of the Holy Spirit will rest upon you.
I SURRENDER
Jesus, I am easily distracted. I surrender my time to You. Meet with me and help me to develop a more regular private watch with You. Help me to distinguish the needed thing. Amen.
