Does a leader’s character matter?

A MOMENT with GOD

Suppose a certain man is righteous and does what is just and right. . . . He is a merciful creditor. . . . He does not rob the poor but instead gives food to the hungry and provides clothes for the needy. He . . . stays away from injustice, is honest and fair when judging others, and faithfully obeys my decrees and regulations. Anyone who does these things is just and will surely live, says the Sovereign Lord.

Ezekiel 18:5, 7-9

Proverbs 20:11

People often argue that our personal lives do not matter as long as we perform well on the job or look good in public. God, however, does not make a distinction between our public and private lives. Justice, righteousness, integrity, mercy, honesty, fairness, and faithfulness are the essential traits of godly character because they reflect God’s character. You are a leader of good character when you display the same integrity in private as you do in public. If you demonstrate ungodly characteristics behind closed doors, you can be sure they will eventually surface for everyone to see, and your effectiveness as a leader will be seriously damaged.

DIVINE CHALLENGE

IF YOU ARE FAITHFUL IN LITTLE THINGS, YOU WILL BE FAITHFUL IN LARGE ONES. BUT IF YOU ARE DISHONEST IN LITTLE THINGS, YOU WON’T BE HONEST WITH GREATER RESPONSIBILITIES.
