What does God expect of me?

A MOMENT with GOD

All praise to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. It is by his great mercy that we have been born again, because God raised Jesus Christ from the dead. Now we live with great expectation, and we have a priceless inheritance—an inheritance that is kept in heaven for you, pure and undefiled, beyond the reach of change and decay.

1 Peter 1:3-4

How precious are your thoughts about me, O God. They cannot be numbered! I can’t even count them.

Psalm 139:17-18

An expectation is a strong hope or confidence that something will occur. Expectations can be clearly expressed: Your boss, for example, tells you what he wants done and how he wants you to do it! Expectations can be assumed: Your wife expects you to call when you will be late. Expectations can become problematic if they are not clearly expressed or if they are unrealistic. Expectations that are not expressed can lead to disappointment. Expectations that are unrealistic can lead to frustration and resentment. Sometimes it seems like God places unrealistic expectations on us. How can we possibly obey all of his commands? How can we love according to his standards? God understands that humanly speaking these expectations are impossible; but with his help they become possible. God’s greatest expectation is not that we live a perfect life but that we love him with all our heart. When you understand that God doesn’t expect us to be perfect but rather applauds us when we sincerely try to follow him, it can be a divine moment because you no longer see him as a strict taskmaster but as a loving encourager.
