You’re having a very personal and significant conversation with a friend at the kitchen table. Or you’re reading a Bible story with your young child just before tucking her in bed. Then the phone rings. Most of us would answer the phone, or at least check the caller ID, because interruptions tend to become top priorities. Our lives often skip from one “urgent” interruption to another. And all the while we keep missing what is really important. What things matter most in life? How can we distinguish true priorities from false ones, like the ringing phone? It’s important that you don’t confuse what’s urgent with what’s important. Therefore, you need to set your priorities first. Don’t let everyone else decide what your day should look like—that should be between you and God. If you make time with him your first priority of the day, you will gain a God-given perspective on your activities for the rest of the day. As the famous theologian Martin Luther once said, “I am so busy now that if I did not spend two or three hours each day in prayer, I would not get through the day.” Ask God to show you what is most important.
