How does God pursue a relationship with me?

A Moment with God

When the cool evening breezes were blowing, the man and his wife heard the LORD God walking about in the garden. So they hid from the LORD God among the trees. Then the LORD God called to the man, “Where are you?”

Surely your goodness and unfailing love will pursue me all the days of my life.

Psalm 23:6

[Jesus said,] “I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, who will never leave you. He is the Holy Spirit, who leads into all truth.”

John 14:16-17

Adam and Eve sinned in disobeying God and rebelling against him. And yet the first thing God did was pursue them in order to restore their relationship with him. Although Adam and Eve would have to experience the consequences of their actions, God had no intention of severing the relationship. It’s hard to imagine this kind of complete unconditional love that pursues you no matter what you have done. When you do what is wrong, or when you reject God, he does not give up on you but rather pursues you for the purpose of forgiving your sin and restoring you to a right relationship with him. God pursues you by causing regret or guilt in your heart—Jesus taught that one of the roles of the Holy Spirit is to convince you when you have sinned. God also pursues you by the truth of his Word, which calls you to confession and repentance. God’s faithful pursuit is a beautiful call to friendship with him. Will you respond?

Divine Promise

Long ago the LORD said to Israel: “I have loved you, my people, with an everlasting love. With unfailing love I have drawn you to myself.”
