How is God surprising?

A Moment with God

He has brought down princes from their thrones and exalted the humble.

Luke 1:52

[The disciples] were shocked to find [Jesus] talking to a woman. . . . The woman left her water jar beside the well and ran back to the village, telling everyone, “Come and see a man who told me everything I ever did! Could he possibly be the Messiah?”

John 4:27-29

[Jesus] gave up his divine privileges; he took the humble position of a slave and was born as a human being. When he appeared in human form, he humbled himself in obedience to God and died a criminal’s death on a cross. Therefore, God elevated him to the place of highest honor and gave him the name above all other names.

Philippians 2:7-9

God often does the opposite of what you would expect. He chose David, the youngest son of Jesse, rather than the oldest, to be king of Israel. He used a donkey to correct the pagan prophet Balaam. He took Saul, the most vicious opponent of the early church, and transformed him into Paul, the greatest and most courageous missionary of all time. He cared for and respected women in a time when they had no rights. And God used a crucifixion, the place of ultimate defeat, and made it the sign of victory over sin and death for all eternity. God’s creativity and ingenuity know no boundaries. Don’t limit God to the horizon of your own understanding and expectations. He wants to surprise you in ways that inspire your awe, love, gratitude, and joy. When something really good happens to you, do you feel lucky? Instead, recognize your good fortune as a divine moment from the hand of God. When you believe he is acting on your behalf, your relationship with him will grow to a deeper level.
