“What is God’s will for my life?” If you believe in God, you have probably asked this question many times. Sometimes “God’s will” seems so vague, so hard to know. Why can’t God give a divine sign that says “This Way”? The truth is that God has already given you a whole set of directions that will keep you in his will. He has given you a revelation of his general will for all believers in his written Word. The Bible has dozens of clear commands for you to follow: Worship God only; love your neighbors and your enemies; use your spiritual gifts; tell the truth; do not covet; do not steal; be sexually pure; remain faithful; teach your children spiritual truths; don’t gossip; be generous; don’t use God’s name disrespectfully; read his Word regularly; don’t let money control you; let the Holy Spirit control your life—and the list goes on. Isn’t that God’s will for your life?

In addition to God’s general will, he also created each person for a specific purpose, and he calls you to do certain specific tasks. But it is usually through steady obedience to his general will that you find the specific direction for your life. In the end, when you are ushered into eternity, will it really matter what house, what car, or maybe even what job you had? The real issue will be whether you have been faithful in loving and serving God. He is vitally interested in the details of your life, but his clear will for all people is simple obedience.
