Finding Joy

Finding Joy

Dear brothers and sisters, when troubles of any kind come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy. For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow.

James 1:2–3 nlt

Pause

I didn’t feel very joyful as I bummed my way up fifteen stairs to my bedroom with a non-weight-bearing cast encasing my left leg. Twelve hours prior, I’d read James 1:2–3 and agreed with the writer’s encouragement to view troubles as opportunities for joy. How was I to know that I’d rupture an Achilles tendon before day’s end?

Throughout the next three months, I learned to apply the theology to which I’d so readily agreed. I found joy in experiencing supernatural strength to meet book deadlines, in friends bringing meals, and in my family’s care. Even more, I found joy in developing stamina in the face of hardship and in learning to view each day, despite its challenges, as a gift to be enjoyed rather than a problem to be endured.

Choosing joy didn’t change my circumstances, but it changed me and my attitude toward them. It’s amazing what happens when we put spiritual principles into practice!

Ponder

Identify one reason for joy in your current challenge.

Pray

Lord, create in me a heart that regards my circumstances as an opportunity for joy.

“Joy is the settled assurance that God is in control of all the details of my life, the quiet confidence that ultimately everything is going to be all right, and the determined choice to praise God in all things.”
