God Aches, Too

This High Priest of ours understands our weaknesses, for he faced all of the same testings we do, yet he did not sin. So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most.

My eldest—my only son—joined a sea-faring ministry for a two-year commitment when he turned eighteen years old. My heart broke the morning he left. None of my friends’ kids had done anything similar. Who could relate to the pain I felt in saying goodbye to my child?

We attended church a couple hours later. The answer to my question was written in calligraphy on a chalkboard: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life” (John 3:16 kjv). My friends couldn’t feel my pain, but God did.

Your circumstances have brought deep pain. Maybe sorrow or grief feel overwhelming right now. Family and friends care, but they can’t fully understand. But God does. He knows exactly how you feel. You do not ache alone.
