Cynthia’s brother-in-law needed a life-saving heart transplant. As he waited for a donor, she encouraged him by buying a Bible and highlighting every mention of the word heart. At a glance, he could see how much God cared for him.
God cares about every part of who we are—physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual. So, while Cynthia’s brother-in-law was facing a physical crisis of the heart, God also cared about his “heart”—“the center of man’s character—who he really is.”*
The Bible mentions the heart in this context nearly a thousand times. A well-known verse says, “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit” (Psalm 34:18). He knows when we hurt. He understands our angst as we wait for healing to come. He is our strength when our hearts grow weak. And he is with us just as Cynthia and her family waited with her brother-in-law for the call that a donor heart had arrived.
